In April 1999 the
former semiconductor departement of Siemens AG was transformed into a separate
company: Infineon Technologies AG. This step was taken in order to provide higher
flexibility and increased financial independence in the rapidly growing and
highly competitive market of semiconductors. Today Infineon Technologies belongs
to the top 10 semiconductor manufacturers of the world.
Infineon covers
all essential areas from R&D activities to large scale production and marketing.
Thus Infineon has the great advantage of comprising activities as a research
house, component manufacturer and systems house. The core technologies are mainly
developed at the corporate division "Corporate Research and Development" supporting
projects on research and basic development for material, product, and systems
technologies in stategically relevant areas, such as VCSEL development. The
work within the NanOp Consortium is strong related to the product development
and will be performed in Berlin and Munich.
Infineon Fiber Optics
is one of the world's largest suppliers of fiber optic components for datacom
applications in LANs, WANs and point-to-point connections. The main products
are the ESCON-link for IBM and IBM-compatible mainframes and components for
multi-standard applications like links for FDDI, Fiber Channel-, Ethernet and
ATM-applications. Large parts of the business are optical connectors and jumper
cables which includes special connectors and cables for parallel optical transmission.
