The A.F. Ioffe Institute was founded in 1918 and is considered the main center of Russian Physics. 23 scientific institutions and many distinguished scientists, including four Nobel Prize winners, came from its walls. The institute is equipped with modern MBE (12 units) and MOVPE equipment (8 units) and has developed characterization facilities. Among the important contributions of the Institute of Solid State Physics are

• prediction of the exciton by Frenkel and its discovery by Gross
• first double heterostructure (DHS) laser patent (Alferov and Kazarinov)
• first realization of room temperature continuous wave lasing in DHS lasers (Alferov et al.)
• prediction of sequential tunneling in superlattices and the concept of far-infrared laser based on inter-subband transitions (Kazarinov and Suris)
• invention and first demonstration of distributed feedback lasers by Alferov and Suris
• development of the InGaAsP material system
• first demonstration of high-power Al-free lasers
