The LEM (central facility for electron microscopy at the University of Karlsruhe) is specialized in the structural and chemical characterization of solids on a sub-nanometer scale. In addition to the conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) nonstandard and quanti-tative image evaluation techniques have been developed for the analysis of ternary compound semiconductors. The TEM study of interfaces and buried layers in optoelectronic devices yield the morphology, strains and chemical composition on a 0.25 nm scale which allows in particular the study of structures with reduced dimensionality (quantum wires, quantum dots).
