The activities
of the MPI-MSP are focused on the formation and investigation of the properties
of low-dimensional systems, including basic research as well as technological
applications. The main topics are:
- atomic bonding
of different materials ("wafer bonding" technique) and related molecular dynamics
simulations and quantum mechanical calculations of electrical and optical
properties of these structures.
- diffusion and
defects in semiconducting materials.
- microstructure,
thermodynamics and nano-chemistry of surfaces and inner boundaries of semiconductors,
ceramic composites and complex oxides.
- formation of
quantum structures in semiconductors.
- photonic crystals.
- integration
of ferroelectric and magneto-optical films in complex layered structures of
different materials (e.g. semiconductors).
- structure investigations
in the nanometer-range by high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM), which
includes techniques of image processing for a quantitative determination of
the local chemical composition, lattice strain and crystallographic transitions
between homo- and hetero-phase boundaries
The facilities
of the institute include dedicated equipment for the fabrication and characterization
of heterostructures, including bonding tools, laser deposition and molecular
beam epitaxy, UHV-facilities, clean room. As the Center of advanced materials
and electron microscopy the MPI-MSP is equipped with high-voltage and high-resolution
transmission electron microscopes and high-resolution scanning microscopes.
